Tour: Casa Diablo IV Geothermal Plant, Sustainability Series 2024

Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at the Casa Diablo IV Facility, the first geothermal project built in the state of California in 30 years. This facility provides 40 megawatts of reliable, zero-emission power and delivers environmental and economic benefits through its innovative closed-loop system. This tour is free and open to all, however space is limited and registration is required. We will meet at the Mammoth Lakes Branch Library, where participants will board a shuttle for the duration of the tour. The tour will be presented by Ormat Technologies Inc.

The Walker + Coleville Sustainability Fair will feature activities focused on gear repair, recycling and upcycling, vermiculture and composting, energy efficiency and induction cooking, and a kid-friendly upcycled art corner.

  • Got a rip in your down jacket? Sleeping pad won't hold air? Headlamp doesn't seem to work? Bring it in and we'll try to help you fix it!

  • Curious about induction cooking and the latest in energy efficiency? Check out our live cooking demo and enjoy sampling our creations.

  • Want to know more about how to compost in our cold climate? Get your hands dirty with our vermiculture expert!

  • We'll also have community organizations with a focus on sustainability sharing the latest on their initiatives across the Eastern Sierra.

Admission is free and open to all ages.

Learn sustainability tips for your home from award-winning author Anne-Marie Bonneau, also known as the Zero-Waste Chef!

This is the fourth and final installment of Mono County's Earth Month: Thursday Night Speaker Series.

Anne-Marie Bonneau, author of the award-winning cookbook The Zero-Waste Chef: Plant-Forward Recipes and Tips for a Sustainable Kitchen and Planet, will share tactics on living with as little plastic, food waste, and stuff as possible. She embraces “zero-waste” as an intention, not a hard-and-fast rule, and believes it’s more impactful for a lot of people to work towards reducing their waste through simple changes and increased awareness, rather than a few people to achieve zero waste perfection.

Admission is free and open to all ages.

Lisa Erdle, PhD, Director of Science & Innovation at 5 Gyres, a microplastics researcher who researches the sources, fate, and effects of microfibers in the environment, will discuss the global movement against plastic pollution and share information and tools to help drive local change to fight this global crisis.

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon® is a collegiate competition that has inspired thousands of students worldwide to enter the clean energy workforce since its inception in 2002. Today, the 10 contests that are the foundation of Solar Decathlon challenge students to design and build high-performance, low-carbon buildings that mitigate climate change and improve our quality of life through greater affordability, resilience, and energy efficiency. The winners are those teams that best blend architectural and engineering excellence with innovation.

Pam Close Bold, the executive director of the High Sierra Energy Foundation, is a 2022 juror of the design competition on April 23, 2022.
