January 2004, the Mammoth Lakes Town Council appointed a Renewable Energy Task Force and charged its members with exploring the use of renewable energy in snowmelt systems. With their Task Force work finished, but still enthusiastic about the potential for energy efficiency and use of renewable energy beyond the snowmelt application, the members formed the High Sierra Energy Foundation, an independent, public benefit, non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, on February 1, 2005.
